CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  It is a relatively new alternative food system in our area.  It is an agreement ,for one growing season, between a Farmer and a group of interested people.  A CSA program helps support small family farms and gives the participants the benefits of eating seasonally, fresh, local produce.  Each farm's CSA program is individually managed and no two programs are alike.  Involvement in a CSA program creates a sense of community and allows people to see where their food is grown.  We have become somewhat desensitized with food.  Grocery stores have allowed us to be able to purchase almost any kind of produce, any day of the year.  Before I started farming, even I was unfamiliar with what is "seasonal" in our area.  Seasonal eating for Fairfield county means lot's of greens in the spring as well as fall such as lettuce, arugula, snap peas, broccoli, and cabbages all prefer the cooler weather.  It is in the midst of summer when we enjoy the old time favorites such as tomatoes, corn, eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, onions, garlic, and the list goes on.  Produce is at it's peak when freshly picked, and we all can taste the difference.  So , no matter where you live, look for a farm near you and stop by for some delicious home-grown produce.
