SPORT HILL FARM

Sport Hill Farm began in 2001, at a time when many established family farms were selling off their fertile land to developers, My husband and I took a gamble to see if we could make a difference.  With years of hard work and perseverance Sport Hill Farm is a place for children to come and learn as well as giving people a place to buy fresh local produce. We are proud of our accomplishments so far.  The Summer Farm Camp, in conjuction with the Unquowa School, gives children the opportunity to learn hands-on about the food they eat.  This camp also teaches them about composting, sustainability as well as seasonal cooking.  Every week the children prepare a luncheon in which produce harvested at my farm are used.   Connecticut is a state rich in agriculture and I am lucky to be a part of it.  Log onto the State of CT website to find a listing of farms and Farmers' Markets located near you.

WHAT'S GROWING

Connecticut is a great state to experience seasonal eating, since we have such diverse weather, it enables us to grow a variety of different produce.  Early Spring crops bring a bounty of greens, lettuces, salad mixes, arugula, spinach, beets, radishes, cabbage , broccoli and snap peas all love the cool weather.  The mid season summer crops brings many old time favorites; zucchini, cucumbers, eggplant, beans, tomatoes, fresh herbs, flowers, peppers, potatoes, scallions and onions.  Once autumn has arrived many of the spring crops are grown again along with other harvest favorites such as acorn, butternut & winter squash, kale, kohlrabi, and pumpkins.  Make sure this season you take the time to visit a local farm in your area, because without farms, there is no food.
